Ashley is a Sustainable Surf and Sea Trees Ambassador, helping to make change in the Surf Industry as well as restore and protect coastal ecosystems around the world. As such, the focus of her shaping involves building EcoBoards and with every Ecoboard made at Ashley Lloyd Surfboards a Sea Tree is planted

What is an EcoBoard?

Rather than using conventional polyester resins (which have a greater environmental footprint) Ashley has switched over to using a biobased epoxy. This switch means that her boards are ECOboard verified through the Sustainable Surf Organization.

Ashley also uses recyclable EPS foam, and any off cuts during the shaping process are recycled through Marko Foam into other foam products.

They're more buoyant than PU boards which can make paddling and wave catching easier.

Flax Cloth

With great appreciation and knowledge of single fin longboard surfing, it has been paramount for Ashley to maintain the classic feel and glide of traditionally built boards while exploring new materials with a smaller environmental footprint.

Sometimes EPS foam boards can have a “chattery” feel on the wave, which some feel takes away from the smooth glide found in traditionally built boards. Ashley has found that Flax cloth, which can be used in addition to fiberglass cloth, addresses this issue. Not only is flax extremely strong, it has a dampening aspect to it, which can add a beautiful smooth glide quality to the vibration sensitivities of EPS foam.

We use two kinds of flax, “Colan” and “Lingrove”. Colan is from Colan, Australia and lingrove comes from San Francisco. Reach out to Ashley if you're curious about learning more!
